I was at the local tennis and pickleball shop today and I noticed these items on the rack of socks they had in the store. For the longest time there was only tennis socks on the rack, but now I noticed there were pickleball socks right alongside the tennis socks on the rack. The obvious question I had to ask is whether there is any difference between a tennis sock and a pickleball sock?
While I am far from an expert on socks, I am fully aware that both tennis and pickleball are played on the same court surfaces and the player movements on the court are very similar. Maybe there is slightly more quick stopping and starting in pickleball vs tennis but can there really be that much to require a totally different line of socks?
Tennis Products vs Pickleball Products
I see this being a thing from manufacturers going forward so they can develop full product lines of pickleball products to complement their tennis products lines. I get it, but I am not sure I really see the difference between the two for many products out there.
Obvious differences exist in tennis rackets vs pickleball paddles and tennis balls vs pickleballs, but in most other equipment I find it hard to justify a difference enough to open my wallet to purchase both product variations.
court shoes
One example of that is tennis shoes vs pickleball shoes. I have some favorite tennis shoes that I have played in for years and which work very well. I use these court shoes for both tennis and pickleball and they hold up well on either surface.
I see that companies like Sketchers have introduced a line of pickleball shoes for pickleball players that they are marketing heavily to recreational players.
I want to support the companies and their new products, but I just don’t see the need to have a separate set of pickleball shoes in addition to tennis shoes. If you are not a tennis player, then by all means go buy the pickleball shoes if you feel that makes you play better on the court.
Tennis socks vs pickleball socks
And same for the socks. I have worn the same brand of athletic socks for years on the court and they work equally as well on the tennis court as they do on the pickleball court.
The Thorlos website says the pickleball socks have added protection around the toes and the heel which will give players added support during their play. Again, I am not an expert on socks but in my opinion the tennis socks will perform just as well on the tennis or pickleball court.
The Thorlos socks are high quality socks that provide solid cushioning and good support for your feet. But they don’t come cheap at $14.50 per pair so you will want to be sure of your decision before you buy.
Whichever one you choose will be a solid decision because I think you win with either one for both the tennis player or the pickleball player.
