Pickleball New Kids on the Block
While Major League Pickleball (MLP) has officially been around for more than a year, the organization is just now filling out a full slate of team rosters and establishing a full league schedule for 2023.
The organization has expanded from eight teams and one event in 2021 to 24 teams, six events, and up to $5 million in prize money and payouts in 2023. There was an MLP Draft at the end of 2022 that set up two levels of twelve teams each. Twelve teams will play in the “Premier” league and twelve teams will play in the “Challenger” league with rosters consisting of two men and two women. The teams will then flip levels and re-draft players for the second season.
The 2023 schedule will consist of two “seasons” consisting of three events in each season with the championships for each season to be played in San Clemente, California at the Lifetime Fitness facility there. All non-championship events will be held at venues spread across Arizona, California, Florida, and Georgia.
